Denim Project

Drawing inspiration from Rei Kawakubo’s ‘Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body,’ Inspired by the formidable and graceful body shapes of sumo wrestlers and the sacred significance of the shimenawa in this revered sport, my garment creates the body of the wearer. I explored the interplay between the human form and the details I found from historical paintings depicting Sumo Wrestlers and experimented with the volume and muscle composition of the Garment. Through my designs, I intend to draw more attention to the athlete’s body which is not usually paid attention to with the detail of traditional ceremonial rope twisting. The lower part of the garment is exploring the detail I was inspired by from conventional sumo wear and styling with pants, layering creates a functional aspect of the garment with the new form of sportswear inspired style.
